In memory of John Grusaky
Most of you skaters already know that last Wednesday night at the Roxy, just after midnight, John Grusaky collapsed while skating to one of his favorite songs. He was immediately surrounded by friends, the Roxy staff and a skater who was a doctor; who tried everything they could to help him.The music stopped and the party was over, but people kept calling out to him to hang in and stay with us. Two skaters turned wide slow circles at the far end of the floor to send him skating vibrations. A large group of EMTs arrived and did their best to save him; all to no avail. John was taken to St Vincent's hospital, where he could not be revived.
The ROXYSKATEGROUP e-mail group became a forum for our community to pour out its pain and share thoughts and emotions with friends. So many skaters came forward with heartfelt personal accounts of their friendships with John, that even those few of us who did not know him well, feel a real personal loss. He was a skater after all, someone who knew the joy of those few magic hours when we roll and dance to the music and be free.
A wake was held on Monday, January 15th was attended by many family members and friends of John and the memorial service on Wednesday at the Roxy kicked off a sad but celebratory skate that John would have loved.
A special thanks is owed to Charlie Zaret for his work on the ROXYSKATEGROUP making sure that all the love was shared, the words were heard and the Roxy community was united in its grief. To see the collected ROXYSKATEGROUP e-mails and photographs of John and his friends, go to the podcast section in DJ Julio's website: Roxy DJ Julio Thank you Julio.
